What is your creative mission?
To create fantastic fiction.
What do you love about what you do?
Writing allows me to explore ideas and make amazing discoveries about the world, humanity, and myself in the process.
What have you learned from your successes/ failures?
I’ve learned rejection is just a beginning. I’ve learned that acceptance is just another type of beginning. Every day is a new start, no matter the outcome of the day before.
How do you keep pushing ahead after a difficult challenge?
I remember that I have done great work before and I am capable of doing it again, despite the tenacity of negative feelings. That’s what gets me to work after a difficult challenge, and working is how I again get back into the groove. There’s no other solution than to remember and then begin creating again.
Have you ever encountered resistance from family, friends, or the world in general? How did you overcome those kinds of blocks?
Mostly I’ve encounter support. The resistance I get is usually in the form of bad advice, such as “You need to write MY story” or “You know, what people really want to read is [insert a genre I don’t have a lick of interest about].” Thanks, but your story isn’t that interesting, and I’m writing not just for an audience, but also for myself.
How has your art and creativity healed you?
The first step of writing is lots of reading. With reading comes growth. And in growth I mend what’s broken and find filling for that which is missing.
What are your NFA Bullet points? What steps would you recommend for anyone who wants to kick some ass and get their creative dreams off the ground?
Never put off your dreams for anybody. (This may sound selfish, but I’m serious, this is so important for you and for everybody in your life who wants the best for you). Immerse yourself in what you love distraction-free every day, even if it’s just for an hour. Practice because every expert was once an amateur.
