What is your creative mission?
To make authentic music that moves people, to tell stories, connect with other creative forces, create a spark, and put a little more love into the world.
What do you love about what you do?
The process (the rush of inspiration, ebb & flow, the personal introspectiveness juxtaposed with beautiful collaborations). There’s a seasonality to it, phases if you will. A private, writing phase, inward, often followed by an exchange with others, then a push out into the world. Theres stillness and motion and release and satisfaction in getting to the heart of the matter then letting it go…
What have you learned from your successes/ failures?
My successes have taught me to trust my sensibility. My failures have tested my trust in my own sensibility and intuition… but it is the vulnerability at times that makes us human and we cannot exist without both successes and failures. I believe that both my successes and failures have made me stronger, and more steady.
How do you keep pushing ahead after a difficult challenge?
I sometimes try to give myself the space and time I need to recharge and recalibrate so when I push forward I am pushing from a place of renewed strength.
Have you ever encountered resistance from family, friends, or the world in general? How did you overcome those kinds of blocks?
Once again, I try to trust myself, and believe in my ideas even if I am the only one who does. My mother used to say that I danced to the beat of my own drum and as much support as I get (and it’s a lot and I am grateful), sometimes you do have to dance to the beat of your own drum! It’s much better than not dancing at all! And sometimes people join in.
How has your art and creativity healed you?
My music has been my therapy at many times in my life. I write myself in and out of trouble and through heartache and good times and bad. I channel my deepest thoughts, fears and desires into my music. There were times that I’m not sure how I would have coped with things if not for my songs and my ability to put words to melody and sing with every fibre of my being. It’s a great gift to write and sing songs, and to be able to share them with others is an even greater gift.
What are your NFA Bullet points? What steps would you recommend for anyone who wants to kick some ass and get their creative dreams off the ground?
You do it, don’t hesitate, don’t second guess, make it good (whatever it is) be real, be authentic, be true, share it with the world if you want to, don’t overthink, don’t squeeze the beauty out of things by over perfecting. Work with people you admire, work with people better then you so you can grow, share what you know, teach what you can, always be kind, be respectful, don’t follow the pack, make your own way and never stop doing what you love!
