What is your creative mission?
My creative mission is to write books that challenge the norm, cause the mind to think outside of the box, and abolish the word “taboo” in literature.
What do you love about what you do?
The freedom: the worlds that I am able to create are limitless.
What have you learned from your successes/ failures?
I’ve learned that opinions vary and not everyone wants the same thing. Every level of the industry is saturated by a specific group of society, and that results in stale, humdrum books that are distributed by the four major publishing houses. I’ve learned to keep going and never EVER stop writing.
How do you keep pushing ahead after a difficult challenge?
I’ll reevaluate my work from start to finish. Pray. Think. Sometimes revamp and then proceed through the gates once again.
Have you ever encountered resistance from family, friends, or the world in general? How did you overcome those kinds of blocks?
Yes, I have. When lack of support and enthusiasm stems from those your heart expect it from, it can hurt. But hurt feelings are a part of life. They exist to teach us various things. I generally accept it for what it is and work harder for what I desire and believe in. When that resistance comes from someone in a position of influence/power, I listen carefully to their reasoning. If I can improve my work, I do. If their reasoning is carefully crafted so as to disguise a deeper meaning, I maneuver my way around them.
How has your art and creativity healed you?
Collectively, it makes me a third person instead of first. I become an onlooker and the visions aren’t stuck in my thoughts night after night. Once a character becomes fully developed on pages, they relent and allow me to sleep a little better. But writing as a whole was always an ocean of healing power, simply because I can do it. I can write whatever I want and think of whatever I want.
What are your NFA Bullet points? What steps would you recommend for anyone who wants to kick some ass and get their creative dreams off the ground?
Write. Keep writing. 5 words, 5 sentences, 5 paragraphs, or 5 pages. The words can start off scattered and abstract but just keep writing. Don’t think of anything else except your story until it’s complete. After you’ve polished your manuscript until it shines and set out to query, prepare yourself for rejection because it comes in waves. All you need is one “yes.” One “yes” makes the other 50 “nos” irrelevant.
