If/ then. How many times have you considered this little algorithm with any number of different variables?
If she wants dessert, then I’m definitely getting some cake.
If I get a raise, then I’m buying that giant TV.
If it’s Friday, I’m drinking a beer.
Fair enough. These if/ then’s are relatively innocuous. And in a way you kind of deserve them. Right?
The problem is when we predicate bigger action steps on things that are out of our control.
If I ever get a chance, then I’ll start my novel.
If my drummer friend gets his act together, then we’ll record an album.
If I make it to the top of the charts, then I’ll be happy.
These if/ then’s are bad news. 1) You’ll never get a chance unless you make one. 2) Putting the responsibility on someone who isn’t invested just dilutes your power. 3) Linking your happiness to an outcome is a surefire way into the dirt. Not cool.
So if you’re gonna play the if/ then game, then be sure to center your power into something that you control.
Ya can’t control the way the world is gonna turn. But you sure can control what you have for breakfast or if you’re gonna write a new song every weekend. Dig?
Focus on the process, not the result.
Great post, Jeff. Agreed—focusing on the process is the only way to go. The longer I live the creative life, more joy I receive by just DOING IT.
The article makes a lot of sense but If I’m being totally honest, I still seem to have slowly lost interest and motivation in my songwriting over the years as I realized I was never going to make it professionally. Too old, family responsibilities, financial realities, etc.
thanks for the comment, JC. is there still joy in actually making music?
Excellent insights Jeff!- Juliette
Jeff, excellent post, as per usual. Yes, process is the most important part of the creative process. I just finished making two completely different videos for two different versions of the same song that my ex and I wrote together years ago. Both processes were supremely enjoyable, challenging and fulfilling, and I learned so much (especially making the videos). Will they make money? Heighten my profile? I don’t care. They were just fun as hell to make.
Thanks again, Jeff.
thanks:)
and right on, rich! you rock, my man…
