If/ then. How many times have you considered this little algorithm with any number of different variables?

If she wants dessert, then I’m definitely getting some cake.

If I get a raise, then I’m buying that giant TV.

If it’s Friday, I’m drinking a beer.

Fair enough. These if/ then’s are relatively innocuous. And in a way you kind of deserve them. Right?

The problem is when we predicate bigger action steps on things that are out of our control.

If I ever get a chance, then I’ll start my novel.

If my drummer friend gets his act together, then we’ll record an album.

If I make it to the top of the charts, then I’ll be happy.

These if/ then’s are bad news. 1) You’ll never get a chance unless you make one. 2) Putting the responsibility on someone who isn’t invested just dilutes your power. 3) Linking your happiness to an outcome is a surefire way into the dirt. Not cool.

So if you’re gonna play the if/ then game, then be sure to center your power into something that you control.

Ya can’t control the way the world is gonna turn. But you sure can control what you have for breakfast or if you’re gonna write a new song every weekend. Dig?

Focus on the process, not the result.

If we get too focused on the results of our action, then we may forget to take joy in the actual creation. And it’s all about the joy.
