If/ then.

How many times in your life have you considered this little algorithm with any number of different variables?

If she wants dessert, then I’m definitely getting some cake.

If I get a raise, then I’m buying that giant TV.

If it’s Friday, I’m drinking a beer.

Fair enough. These if/ then’s are relatively innocuous. And in a way you kind of deserve them. Right?

The problems is when we predicate bigger things on ambiguous or external factors.

If I ever get a chance, then I’ll start my novel.

If my drummer friend gets his act together, then we’ll record an album.

If I make it to the top of the charts, then I’ll be happy.

These if/ then’s are bad news. You’ll never get a chance unless you make one. Putting the responsibility on someone else who isn’t invested, just diminishes your power. And linking your happiness to an outcome is a one easy way into the shadows. Not cool.

If the if/then is a stall, then identify it and step forward. Make your own chance.

If the in/then gives your power away, then take it back. Find another solution. Or someone else who will step up.

If you’re linking your happiness to an external event, then go inside yourself. Ask yourself why this thing matters so much? Why it is driving you? Ask yourself why you aren’t experiencing happiness now?

Being on the top of the charts might be cool, but the real joy is in the creation, right? Singing that song. Penning those words. Painting that canvas.

If we get too focused on the results of our action, then we forgot to take joy in the actual creation.

And it’s all about the joy.

When was a time you gave your power way? When was a time you reclaimed it?

Email me. Let’s share. We’re in this together, ya know.
